The purpose of the class is to teach simple joinery layout and techniques using hand tools.

Each student will build a wooden tote with one removable till. The carcass of the tote and till will include dovetails, and mortise and tenons. The handle will include mortise and tenon joinery pegged with wooden dowels and a saddle joint also pegged with wooden dowels, connecting it to the body of the tote.

John says, “This class is open to people of all ability levels but is geared towards beginners. It would be helpful if you had a basic understanding of wood work and hand tools but if you’re willing to learn, I’m willing to teach.”

Instructor Bio: John Harvey has been with Lowell’s Boat Shop for over three years as a professional boatbuilder. He came to us a graduate of IYRS School of Technology and Trades in Newport, RI where he completed a two-year course of study in wooden boat construction and restoration. He has been a woodworker for several years and has contributed several pieces of his work to our Holiday Open House.
